Soapwalla Brand Introduction

Soapwalla Brand Introduction

I've been really enjoying some niche brands lately and I'm excited to share with you a few over the next few weeks.  The first is Soapwalla.  A brand that is made in my hometown of Brooklyn NY. This, like many natural/organic brands, was born in founder Rachel Winard's NYC kitchen one evening.  She focuses on sourcing the finest ingredients without sacrificing on quality.  And what better way to understand a brand, then hearing from the owner herself!  I'm excited to have had the ability to send Rachel some questions that will help all of us get inside her brilliant mind and learn more about her and her beautiful products.  But first, let me share some favorites that should be on your radar:

Deodorant Cream 2oz $14*

Ingredients: (*: certified organic, +: food-grade) Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba)*; Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Oil*; Rosehip Seed Oil*; Butyrospermun parkii (Shea) Butter; Corn Starch*+; Sodium Bicarbonate+; Kaolin Clay; Vegan Kosher Glycerin*+; a custom blend of essential oils, including: Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender)*; Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree)*; Citrus Sinensis (Sweet Orange); Mentha Piperita (Peppermint)*; Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergaptene-free Bergamot)*; Non-GMO Sunflower Lecithin*+; Non-GMO Vitamin E*+.

I've never used a natural deodorant before and I was very skeptical when this arrived for me to try. It has a thick balmy texture that you use your hands to apply to your underarms. It immediately transforms to a powder finish and leaves behind a soft lavender and tea tree oil scent. It kept me dry and fresh all day! There is also a citrus scent version for those that like more of a zesty scent. If you're looking for a natural way to stay fresh, give this one a try. I'm forever hooked now and I'm getting my husband to try it as well.

Glycerin Soap Bar Activated Charcoal & Petitgrain Soap Bar $13*

Ingredients: (*: certified organic, +: food-grade) Distilled water, saponified oils (sunflower, palm kernel, rice bran, coconut), kosher vegetable glycerin (edible), sorbitol (edible), sodium cocoate, palm and coconut fatty acids, kosher salt (sodium chloride - edible), activated new growth bamboo charcoal, essential oil blend (which includes but is not limited to Australian tea tree, Egyptian Petitgrain, rose geranium)

Facial bar soaps have become a new obsession of mine.  I love the convenience, travel friendliness and ingredients.  This one is no exception. It's perfect for anyone suffering with congestion and wants to gently detox and cleanse the skin without stripping it. It's made with activated bamboo charcoal which is known to bring out toxins and petitgrain essential oil which gives a beautiful floral (but soft) fragrance. I found it especially helpful to use right before my hormonal breakouts began, all the way through to healing. It just leaves skin feeling fresh and clean and never stripped. I love it as a morning cleanse for a fresh pick-me-up or as second cleanse in the evening to really clean out pores and completely remove any residue left behind from the first cleanse. Now I just need to keep my husband from using it all up!

Restorative Face Serum 1 fl.oz $56*

Ingredients:(*: certified organic, +: food-grade) Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) Oil*; Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Oil*+; Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil*+; Rosa Canina (Rosehip Seed) Oil*; Oryza Sativa (Rice Bran) Oil; Prunus Aermeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil; Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae Rhamnoides L.) Oil; Macerated Carota (Carrot) Oil*; Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Oil*; Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot Seed) Oil*; Non-GMO Tocopherol*+; essential oils of: Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender)*, Citrus Sinensis (Sweet Orange), Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergaptene-free Bergamot)*

Any serum that starts with Jojoba oil is a keeper in my book. Jojoba oil is an ingredient that closely mimics our own natural sebum. Oily/Combination skin can benefit from using Jojoba because it trains your skin to produce less oil. It helps balance, moisturize, act as an anti-inflammatory and many more when used in products. This serum is very lightweight and sinks into the skin without leaving behind a greasy, oily film. It has a mild lavender/orange scent that isn't overpowering and goes away after a minute. It leaves skin feeling moist and enveloped in comfort. It's full of calming, brightening and hydrating ingredients like Rosehip Seed Oil, Sea Buckthorn, Carrot Oil, Evening Primerose and many more. A beautiful serum if you're looking to switch things up. I would compare it to May Lindstrom's The Youth Dew.

So there you have some products I've tried and loved!  Now let's get to know the creator:

Q. What inspired you to create your brand?

A. Out of sheer necessity! I have systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune illness that can manifest itself in a number of ways. Like others who suffer from lupus, I get terrible skin rashes, hives, and irritated skin patches. When it was at its worst, I could barely use water on my skin without irritation. Late one night in early 2002, after months of unsuccessfully hunting for face and body products that wouldn’t aggravate my skin, I delved into creating my own skincare products. I tried everything on the market I could find, without luck, and finally decided to start making my own products that were as healthy and wholesome as possible. The product line grew from there. After 7 years of perfecting the line, I premiered Soapwalla in December 2009.

Q. Which ingredients do you feel are your power players?

A. My absolute all-time favorite ingredient is jojoba. It looks and acts like an oil but is actually a liquid wax --  of more than 350,000 identified plant species, jojoba is the only one which produces significant quantities of liquid wax esters that are nearly identical to the sebum that our skin naturally produces.  I use jojoba wherever I can; it’s found in our oil-based products (Concentrated Repair BalmRestorative Face SerumLuxurious Body Oils and Resilience Pregnant Belly Oil) as well as our Deodorant Creams. It’s a potent wound healer and anti-inflammatory.  It’s a truly magical substance.

Q. Is there a particular skin type you created your products for?

A. I want everyone to be able to use my products, so I formulate with that in mind.  I craft products that are effective and get the job done - I've formulated products that address issues with acne, eczema, rosacea, etc., but these products are gentle enough that folks with even the most sensitive skin can use Soapwalla's products without fear.

Q. If you could choose one star product from your collection, what would you choose and why?

A. Agh, this is like picking a favorite child! My star product changes from season to season, but right now the product I don't leave home without is the Concentrated Repair Balm. Especially during the cold, dry months, our Balm is a must-have for irritated and dry skin. I particularly love that the Balm melts instantly upon touch and disappears into the skin, so I can apply and get on with my day (vs waiting patiently for it to soak into the skin). Powerhouse ingredients like moringa, arnica and prickly pear seed oil repair tissue damage, reduce inflammation and redness, and combat dryness. Horse chestnut and blue tansy strengthen circulation and provide unparalleled skin healing abilities. Because of my suuuuuuper sensitive skin issues - and the fact that I am in production a few times a week, so my hands get a pretty intense beating - I slather the Balm on the second I get out of the shower, and apply to my face and hands throughout the day as needed.

Q. What would be the ideal skincare routine using your products?

A. At night, I recommend first washing with the appropriate cleanser for your face, using tepid (not hot) water. Follow with a facial toning mist - this is such a crucial step! You can saturate a cotton ball or washable cotton pad with the toning mist, then gently swipe across your face and neck, paying special attention to the folds around the nose and the hairline. While your skin is still damp, you'll apply theRestorative Face Serum or Balm (or both, which is what I do in the winter).

In the morning, you'll splash cool water on your face, follow with a toning mist, and then immediately apply your moisturizer. You don't need to wash your face in the morning - it's best not to over cleanse your skin.  Apply the SPF of your choice, and you're ready to face the day!

Q. Where do you see your brand going in the future?

A. I'm SO excited about the products we're releasing this spring!  First, we'll have a gorgeous algae- and chlorophyll-based facial mask that will do wonders for your post-winter skin. In late spring, we'll be releasing two new deodorant creams! These will be baking soda-free but just as odor-busting as the originals. This is truly a passion project for me, as I've been working on these formulas for nearly 4 years.

I hope you enjoyed this post.  I have a few more to share over the coming weeks.  I love getting to know the creator of a brand....it just helps me to love their products even more!
