WHYLD Skincare Introduction

I get so excited to see new brands emerging that focus on quality ingredients, beautiful formulations and incredible people behind the brand.  When Whyld Skincare reached out to me to see if I wanted to try their products, I immediately said yes.  I love giving new brands (that are amazing) some love and exposure into a very concentrated market.  So let's learn about the products I tried and a bit about the person behind the brand.

Active Botanical Cleanse $36 120ml/ 4fl oz

This cleanser has to be the perfect refreshing morning cleanser.  It has an aloe base that allows it to easily massage over your skin and remove any residue left behind from your evening products. Aloe and Soapberry do a great job at retaining the moisture in your skin helping this to be a a non-stripping and gentle formula.  It has a very faint scent of Rose, Lavender and Ylang Ylang. The texture is a light gel that emulsifies with water and leaves skin very soft and ready for your next skincare step.  While you can use this formula to remove makeup, I personally don't.  I prefer using it as a morning or second cleanse.  

Youth Activating Elixir $76 30ml/ 1fl oz

Ingredients: Sclerocarya birrea (marula) seed oil*, Crambe abyssinica seed oil, phytosterol esters, Citrullus lanatus (watermelon) seed oil, octyldodecanol, Ribes nigrum (black currant) seed oil, Helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil unsaponifiables, Cardiospermum halicacabum flower/leaf/vine extract, tocopherol, Punica granatum (pomegranate) seed extract, Citrus aurantium amara (neroli) flower oil, Rosa damascena (rose) flower oil, Salvia hispanica (chia) seed extract, Chamomilla recutita (matricaria) flower extract*, Boswellia carterii (frankincense) resin extract*, Lavandula angustifolia (lavender) flower oil, bisabolol,Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract, Helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil. *Ingredients from Wild-crafted farming. All Ingredients are NON-GMO

This serum is packed with incredible ingredients.  I'm a huge fan of a Marula Oil base and it's 94% of the formula. Marula is incredibly nourishing and balancing without feeling oily or thick when applied and it sinks in beautifully. It also has incredible ingredients like Crambe abyssinica seed oil which is rich in Omega 6 fatty acids, Omega 3 and Linoleic and Linolenic Acids.  Another star ingredient that is getting a lot of love at the moment is Watermelon Seed Oil.  It is also rich in Linoleic and Oleic Acid, Omega 6 and 9 as well as Vitamins A and E.  It helps to heal dry skin, balance and condition it.  It doesn't stop there...Chia Seed Oil, Pomegranate extract and Sunflower Seed Oil all help aid in nourishment and creating a youthful appearance.  It has a very faint scent of Neroli, Rose and Frankincense.  I've been testing this serum for a few weeks during the day and I absolutely love the light texture, the way it absorbs into the skin and controls oil all day!  I highly recommend trying this beautiful formula if you're in the market for a new serum.

Now that you know about a couple of products, let's hear from the founder Lauren Couture on what makes her brand special:

Q. What inspired you to create your brand?
A. A true love with skincare is at the core why we became a brand, as well as a deep desire to contribute our knowledge and personal experience in the skincare field. From many years of working behind the scenes in the beauty/skincare industry, we cultivated some indispensable knowledge from working directly with brands, suppliers, ingredients, and custom manufacturing. Working behind the scenes truly inspired us to create what we know as WHYLD Skincare today. We found that some of the most potent and unprocessed botanical extracts and essential oils were coming from small farms around the world who don’t necessarily have the money to become certified organic but are of equal quality. These amazing plants are wild-crafted and grow indigenously, as well as being untouched by conventional farming. We of course love our certified organic farms and ingredients, but felt strongly we wanted to support these farms to help sustain their communities, as many of these places depend on their craft to survive and hopefully prosper. That is how WHYLD Skincare was born.

We were also inspired by what we were disappointed with in the beauty world. We firmly disagree with the way marketing is used in western consumerism in general. So much miseducation, green-washing and misleading marketing has created misconceptions about products and ingredients. Big companies tell you that their products are clean and natural and that they will do everything under the sun for you. Most of which are not clean and natural, but are preying on people who don’t read their labels or question them. Small companies have oversaturated the market with their claims of being the purest, safest, and most effective, while charging you an arm and leg and being equally manipulative. This is what we are not happy with. We believe quality and luxury in a product does not have a $$$ price tag and a company should be ethical with their pricing and marketing. We have safe, non-toxic products that really work in a realistic way, and we do not feel that being unapproachable and over-priced is the way to say we are quality and luxury. Luxury skincare can be approachable. Not only this, but skincare should be realistic and not a marketing ploy. Your skin does not look different overnight. Just like anything in your body does not change overnight. Change takes time and care, and we feel that using skincare products is a commitment to yourself, just like working out at the gym.

Q. Which ingredients do you feel are your power players?
A. First, We are in love with Marula oil which is featured in our Youth Activating Elixir. It is just beginning to become more recognizable in the skincare world, but is still in the shadow of the ever popular Argan oil. People are slowly learning more and more about this amazing nut oil and we believe it is the new Argan. (or actually FAR better) Marula oil contains between 70-78% skin compatible omega 9 fatty acid (Argan has 40%). It is a monounsaturated high-oleic acid that, unlike omega 3 and 6, is also produced in human skin.  This means better penetration with less clogging of the pores. It also typically has 16% more antioxidants than Argan oil which is even better. It is also an incredibly stable oil, which needs virtually no preservation is needed and is “self preserving”. Research is still ongoing to determine why Marula oil has such exceptional stability, but they think it may be due to its unique fatty acid profile and a variety of exceptionally potent antioxidants including tocopherols, sterols and flavonoids also know as Vitamin E, flavinol, procyanidin, and catechins.

In general, Marula is so amazing because it absorbs incredibly quickly, very high in Vitamin C, making it a perfect treatment ingredient (has 4 times as much Vitamin C in an orange). It contains 60% more antioxidants, vitamins, fatty and essential fatty acids (Oleic, Linoleic, Stearic, Palmitic) than that of any other botanical oil. Last but not least, it also has incredible antimicrobial properties that benefit all skin types.

Our Marula oil is wild-crafted by the Maasai tribe in Kenya, which is one of their main sources of income and supports the entire community. It is sustainably produced with none of the fruit ever being wasted. It is completely unrefined, vegan and gluten free.

Second up is Soapberry extract, or its botanical name Sapindus mukurossi, our next favorite among some of our star ingredients. It contains natural saponins that provide cleansing and detergent properties and is featured in our Active Botanical Cleanse. The extract has been shown to inhibit melanin production, reducing the appearance of age spots and sun damage making our cleanser an amazing treatment in cleanser form. These plant-derived saponins also help fight infections, and suppress the growth of bacteria on the skin, due to its strong anti-microbial activity making it equally suitable for supporting acneic skin types and keeping break-outs at bay.

Q. Is there a particular skin type you created your products for?
A. We wanted to create products for all skin types, although we recognize not every product is a one size fits all. It takes trying something to see if it will work for you, since everyone’s body is different in the way it will respond. In the future we may have treatments for specific skin types, but at the moment we feel all of our products are multi-correctional with their bevy of incredible ingredient qualities.

Q. If you could choose one star product from your collection, what would you choose and why?
A. Our star product would have to be our Youth Activating Elixir, which contains 94% Marula oil. It is a super fast-absorbing facial oil which we formulated with 17 of the most active botanical oils and extracts we could find. It is made to hydrate, firm, and brighten with regular use, to reveal smooth, radiant looking skin. Wild-crafted Marula, Watermelon, Black Currant, Pomegranate, Crambe and supercritical Chia Seed oil provide incredibly nourishing essential fatty acids, antioxidant protection against free radicals and help defend against future signs of aging. It is the ultimate multi-treatment product which acts as a hydrator/moisturizer and treatment serum (brightener,firming, and protection) in one. We also love it because it is so multi-functional in its uses. We use it alone every morning and night, but also have been known to add a couple drops into our foundation if we are looking for a very natural, glowy look for the day/night. Also, it can be added as a booster into your usual moisturizer, if you are someone who likes using a water based product along with an oil hydrator. In this case, adding a few drops to your usual product (we think its best with unscented moisturizers or water-based serums) will make a beautiful custom concoction completely unique to your needs.

Q. What would be the ideal skincare routine using your products?
A. We know some people have an established routine and may just be looking to integrate one or two products. In that case, we encourage you to integrate WHYLD Skincare in however you like, and make your routine work for you.

For us, we usually change our routine depending on the weather. Right now, due to the cold weather in Northern California we are very dry. Washing our face in the morning is comprised of just splashing it with water to get rid of excess oil during the night. Depending on how dry we feel that day, we will apply either the Dynamic Defense Lotion, or I personally use the Youth Activating Elixir AM and PM.
At night we both cleanse with either the Active Recovery Wash, or the Active Botanical Cleanse. The Active Recovery Wash is great for all skin types but especially loved by sensitive or acneic skin. The Active Botanical Cleanse is formulated more specifically for someone who wears make-up or needs a more effective cleanse to get any and all excess makeup or oil off making it a perfect PM cleanser. It is truly magical at getting every last inch of the most water-proof makeup without being harsh on the skin. We have never found a natural skin care product able to do this, and believe me, we have tried it all!
We like to keep it simple with just a cleanse and moisturizer/oil and sometimes add in an occasional weekly mask, which we are working on right now for future release.


Q. Where do you see your brand going in the future?
A. As we are still in our infancy as a brand, we wanted to start out with very few products in our collections. We wanted to really focus on what we think is essential to a skin care routine. We think brands can confuse consumers by offering far too many products before people are familiar with them as a company. For both our men and women’s collection, offering the best cleansing and hydrating/moisture options was our first and most crucial step. We also felt strongly about having a men's collection to attract men who are looking for more quality and efficacy in their products. Not enough brands appeal to both genders, and our products are all unisex in their branding and their scent profile. We also don’t want to discourage women from trying our men’s collection, as they are equally suitable for females. We have been testing and tweaking these 4 products for the last 2 years, and feel whole-heartedly that they are truly amazing. Product formulation, perfection, and testing takes a very long time, and we do plan to release more products down the road once we have had time to make them perfect. (We are currently working on products to release down the road) On a larger scale, we want to make a bigger impact on the industry with our brand. We acknowledge that there many amazing products out there, and the market is very saturated with people saying they are “THE BEST”. We want to separate ourselves by standing by our brand values of simplicity, quality, luxury, and style all the while being approachable and REAL in our marketing. It’s one thing to say “transparency and authenticity”, but it is truly another thing to really mean it and live by it as a company. We feel strongly that we would like to set an example among others to hold strong ethics within an industry that has a lot of deception and manipulation.

Q. What words of encouragement would you have for others starting their own skincare lines?
A. If you have passion for both skincare AND business than it is a great match! You really need both to be successful. Passion is at the core of any great business, and if you truly believe in what you are doing, and love to do it every day, than you can make it work. For us it is truly a pleasure to make products that we know are made to the highest standards, quality, supporting others, and coming from a place of love. We don’t feel that making money is worth it unless it coming from a place of integrity. We also believe that fulfillment is intrinsically more important than monetary success. If you aren’t fulfilled in what you do everyday, and feel passion for it, no matter how successful you become in the bank, it just doesn’t matter. That is what we try to remind ourselves everyday.
