Fig & Yarrow Intro
I'm excited to share with you a brand I've been exploring recently...Fig + Yarrow. A few things that drew me into the line were their formulations and different size options of their formulas. They offer a variety of products fitting different needs. You're sure to find something that works for you! I found a couple products that my skin loves and I can't wait to share them with you. And as a special treat, hear from the owner!
Ingredients: Water (aqua), essential oils of: Santalum spicatum (sandalwood)†, Citrus aurantium (neroli), Rosa damascena (rose)
I never used to be into mists until this past year. There are so many beautiful formulations out there that help balance the skin, hydrate and prep it for your serums/moisturizers. This particular formula is perfect for combination, congested or irritated skin. Sandalwood is amazing at calming inflammation and helping with acne. While Rose and Neroli help to balance, hydrate and heal the skin. I found this formula to really be useful during the times when my skin was breakout out or feeling irritated/sensitive. You can spray directly from the bottle or mist onto a cotton round and apply it. I also love using this formula to activate clay masks versus using plain water. It adds a nice buffer to more harsher masks.
Ingredients: Illite (French green clay), Bentonite (clay), essential oil of Lavandula angustifolia (lavender)*
This isn't your typical detox Kaolin clay mask...instead, it uses French Green Clay along with Bentonite clay to balance, tone and exfoliate the skin without the harsh drying effect that I find Kaolin clay can do. French Green clay is packed with minerals such as calcium, aluminum, magnesium, silica, phosphorous, copper and zinc and has high absorbent properties (according to my research). While Bentonite clay is also packed with minerals that help remove impurities from the skin without stripping or irritating it. I found this clay mask works perfectly for a 10 min spa session. I mix a tablespoon of the mask with the Complexion Water and apply it with a brush. It leaves my skin feeling smooth, fresh and balanced. And even though it has Lavender Oil in it, it isn't strong ( I personally don't like lavender, I hate the scent...but this one is very mild). I think those suffering from combination, oily or acne prone skin will love it.
Ingredients: oils of: Rosa rubiginosa (rosehip)*†,Vitis vinifera (grape) seed oil*†, Squalane (olive), Simmondsia chinensis (jojoba)*, Corylus avellana (hazelnut), Limnanthes alba (meadowfoam) seed, Prunus domestica (plum) kernel†, Argania spinosa (argan)*†, Punica granatum (pomegranate)*, Oenothera biennis (evening primrose)*, Tocopherol (vitamin E, non-GMO), Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract, essential oils of: Rosa damascena (rose), Santalum spicatum (sandalwood), Boswellia carteri (frankincense), Vetiveria zizanioides (vetiver), Daucus carota (carrot seed). *certified organic, †virgin
My personal favorite from the products I've tried is this serum. Firstly, I love the travel size option. The perfect mini for testing the formula or if you just need something to travel with. In terms of formula, typically, I'm not a fan of products with high levels of Rosehip as I've found it doesn't really do anything for my skin. However, this formula packs nice hydrating and repairing ingredients that my skin loves. Argan, Jojoba, Rose, Sandalwood and Evening Primrose are all ingredients that help to nourish, balance and calm my skin. This formula is really lightweight and absorbs completely into the skin without any greasiness or oily residue. It has a very faint earthy scent, not the typical Rosehip (although I personally love the scent of it when used in high concentration like Pai or La Belle Lune...but this is very mild). Perfect for anyone that needs a balancing, hydrating and antioxidant rich formula for either day or night in a mini!
Ingredients: Saccharum officinarum (cane sugar)*¥, Coffea arabica (coffee) bean*¥, Olea europaea (olive) oil*†, Ricinus communis (castor) oil*, Butyrospermum parkii (shea) nut butter*†, Theobroma cacao (cocoa) butter*†, Cocos nucifera (coconut) oil*†, Elettaria cardamonum (cardamom) essential oil, Tocopherol (vitamin E, non-GMO), Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract*. *certified organic, †virgin, ¥fair trade
Body scrubs don't excite me very much...but when I smelled and tried this formula, my skin spoke for me. It has a gritty yet smooth texture that once applied to the skin, it bursts open with a whiff of coffee and glides on leaving smooth and hydrated skin behind. The Shea, Olive and Coconut additions really hydrate the skin while Cane Sugar and Coffee exfoliate it, leaving kissably soft skin behind. Besides a full on black mess in the shower, my body felt so comforted and soft afterwards that I didn't even need to apply any body oil or moisturizer after using it. A little splash of water to remove any excess grit at the bottom of your shower and you're good to go.
So those are my four favorites. Now hear from the brand master:
Q. What inspired you to create your brand?
A. I knew from a very young age that I loved collecting and working with plants and minerals; and starting about 9 or 10 that I really loved making natural beauty concoctions. It was never a career path consideration though until a particular meditation in which the whole thing unfolded in my mind as sort of a directive, basically you will start this line and do this and call it this… One of those undeniably inspiring moments when you feel you’ve just synced up with your higher knowing/spirit/godself…
Q. Which ingredients do you feel are your power players?
A. Too many to list, but I really love clays. They cover a whole spectrum of attributes. You can improve specific skin issues from over dry and sensitive to oily, imbalanced or acne-prone based on the specific clays you use. They can be used to detox electromagnetic energies that we’re exposed to by way of our devices and computers or draw poisons and toxins from the skin. It’s a truly amazing material for so many things!
Q. Is there a particular skin type you created your products for?
A. I didn’t approach my formulations with a specific skin type in mind so much, but more skin states. My core approach is more about encouraging balance through providing good nourishment to the skin . It's an extension of my food philosophy. I like uncomplicated, balanced, clean/non-toxic, colorful, fresh, artfully combined food with integrity. Also, I am a fat lover. I feel like the more butters and oils we’re consuming both internally and externally, the more balance we’ll start to see so that a lot our skin issues resolve themselves.
Q. If you could choose one star product from your collection, what would you choose and why?
A. I’m personally a big fan of the Yarrow Buttercream because it’s really transformative for my hands and I haven’t found another product that works so well. But our top seller next to the Rose+Vanilla lip blush is our Underarm Lotion because it’s non-toxic, nourishing and really works.
Q. What would be the ideal skincare routine using your products?
A. Cleanse once morning and once night with our Palmarosa Cleanser then Cleansing Nectar after each or in between. Facial Scrub once every 2-3 days. Hydrate with a Complexion Water of choice. Massage Facial Serum into face, including light lymph drain down neck. Yarrow Buttercream on face if dry, chapped or irritated. Once a week do our Facial Care Protocol which begins with an Cleansing Nectar cleanse, then Herbal Steam, Clay Mask of choice, Facial Scrub, Complexion Water and Facial Serum massage.
Q. Where do you see your brand going in the future?
A. We're building out the prototype now, but I see the possibility for many F+Y apothecaries each with a raw food and juice bar, class space and spa.
So there you have it! I hope you enjoyed getting to know this brand and if you try something from reading this post, give me a shout! I want to know how you liked it.
